Lagos Lawmakers Call on Police to Intensify Surveillance

Lagos assembly lawmakers have called on the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni to intensify community policing in the state during the yuletide period.

Moving the Motion on the floor of the House Monday, the Majority Leader of the House, stated that this was necessary to curtail the activities of hoodlums during Christmas and New Year celebration.

Citing a case of ritual killing on Ikorodu road where bodies of some ladies were found recently, Agunbiade said, the Neighbourhood Watch Law should be reviewed to give the officers more power on surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Speaking on the matter, Mrs. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho emphasised that the people must know that killing other people is a criminal offence, and that it is worrisome that such a thing is happening at this material time.

She however, said that we all have a right to secure our environment and that carrying of arms should be restricted to those, who have the authority to carry arms.

In his contribution, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa stated that everything could not be left for the police and that the assembly could come up with relevant laws as there are constant cases of murder, robbery and others in the state.

In his view, Mr.Tobun Abiodun said that ritual killing is now rampant in the state, saying that bodies of four ladies were found somewhere in Alimosho area of the state few months back.

He added that the issue is a general one across the state, and that the Neighbourhood Watch should be strengthened so that they could work effectively.

Another lawmaker, Hon. Rotimi Olowo said that ritual killing is barbaric and condemnable, while revealing that four men were slaughtered in Shomolu area of the state recently.
