2 Nabbed with 20 Bags of Cannabis

Two suspected smugglers, Ismaila Aliu and Edwin Igwe, have been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Border Patrol Unit at the Seme-Badagry area of Lagos State while attempting to smuggle into the country, 20 bags of dried weeds, suspected to be cannabis.

Vanguard gathered that the suspects were apprehended at Boglo Sea Beach, near Seme border, when a boat dropped off the bags of cannabis.

Police sources disclosed that the Commander of the Border Patrol Unit in Seme, CSP Patrick Ejedawe, who received an intelligence report on the activities of smugglers, stormed the beach with his men and apprehended the suspects, while their colleagues escaped.

It was also gathered that three motorcycles used for smuggling and a 250 horsepower boat engine were also recovered.

One of the suspects, Aliu, told Vanguard that he was not aware that the bags contained cannabis.

“I am a native of Seme, in Badagry and a smuggler. I cross lot of contraband goods into the country through Seme but I didn’t know that the contents of those bags were cannabis, hence I wouldn’t have carried them.

“On the day I was arrested, I was at home when I got a call that there was a job. When I got there, I saw the bags and before I could do anything the police showed up and all boys in the beach took to their heels. I refused to run because I don’t know why they were running.

“When I was arrested, I told them that I knew nothing about the cannabis and how it made its way into the country, that I was only called to cross it for them and the police asked me to call the man who brought the job and I called Igwe and told him that there was problem and the police needed N500,000, when he brought the money, he was also arrested and we were all taken away,” he said.

Igwe, on his part, told Vanguard that he was just an errand boy and that the owner of the goods was in Ghana.

He said: “I am not the owner of the goods, it belongs to one woman, Patricia, she is based in Ghana. I know the woman because I am a loader at Togo-Ghana border and the woman knows me very well. She was the one who contracted Aliu for the job and Aliu brought his boys to do the job. I don’t know how much they bargained, but when the boat landed at the beach, Aliu was on ground with his boys, suddenly the police showed up and arrested him.

“He called Madam Patricia that he needed money to sort himself out and the woman called and promised to pay me 10,000 cefars to take the money to him but when I got there, I was apprehended.”
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Bala Hassan, who paraded the suspects, said the suspects will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the end of investigation.
