48 Laws Of Power…Law 3

Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions

Keep people off balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense. Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelope them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late.

Law 3. Bukola Saraki noticed that the APC leaders were not going to nominate him as the party senate president, and because of that he jumped different ships to attain the power he wanted.

After he had shunned a meeting with Vice-president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, calling him a mere commissioner, though he later denied the news, the senate president also shunned another meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. This was after he had told him he would be in attendance with the president and other APC senators.

The APC had chosen Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as their preferred candidates for the senate Presidency and Speaker slots respectively.

But in a move Nigerians called “smart”, Bukola Saraki emerged as the Senate president with support from PDP supporters and some APC supporters who are loyal to Saraki. The APC and PDP senate also elected Yakubu Dogara as Speaker over the APC candidate, Gbajabiamila.

Blindsiding Buhari

Mr Buhari had arranged a meeting with the APC senators after his arrival from the G7 summit in Germany, a meeting Bukola Saraki had assured the president, he would attend at the International Conference Centre. But instead he went ahead to attend a marathon meeting with members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to garner adequate support for his election as Senate president.

APC members, APC senators, Bola Tinubu, President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice-president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo all woke up to hear the news of Bukola Saraki as senate president shortly after.

President Buhari felt deceived and did not bother to attend the meeting he had previously called.

Mr Bukola Saraki was quickly sworn in, ignoring the president’s proclamation for the inauguration of the National Assembly. He even used a letter from the presidency to legitimize his inauguration. 57 senators loyal to Mr Saraki, most of them PDP members, unanimously elected him. This after he had been nominated by Dino Melaye and Sanni Yerima.
