48 Laws of Power… Law 19 – Buhari & Dasuki

48 Laws of Power…Law 19: Know Who You’re Dealing with – Do Not Offend the Wrong Person.

There are many different kinds of people in the world, and you can never assume that everyone will react to your strategies in the same way. Deceive or outmanoeuvre some people and they will spend the rest of their lives seeking revenge.

They are wolves in lambs’ clothing. Choose your victims and opponents carefully. Never offend or deceive the wrong person!

The story:

It seems that the battle between the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki and the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has taken a new look as the the feud between the two had been traced back to history.

Much discussions about the present feud has been linked to the report that President Muhammadu Buhari was arrested by the former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki during the coup that saw the emergence of Ibrahim Babangida as military ruler in 1985.

When the former military ruler, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, overthrew Buhari in 1985 through military coup d’etat, Sambo Dasuki was also said to have led a team of three army officers to arrest and detain Buhari who was then a Major General.

It was also alleged that President Buhari’s detention in prison for the period of 2 years led to the destruction of his 17 years old marriage with his first wife Hajia Safinatu.

Safinatu who was the first lady of Nigeria from December 1983 to August 1985, divorced Buhari immediately after he was released from the prison on the basis that she was desolate during his imprisonment. This led to his marriage with Aisha Buhari in 1989.

However, in reaction to the allegation, Col Sambo Dasuki has denied spearheading the arrest of President Muhammadu Buhari shortly after he was overthrown as a Military Head of State in August 1985. He also clarified that his arrest and detention is far from the public notion that it was a retaliation of a similar maltreatment against Buhari in 1985.

Speaking with a blogger and publisher of Economic Confidential, Mr. Yushau Shuaib, Dasuki said

“I always respect and dignify my seniors and those in positions of authority, whether in service or after. Though as a young officer, I was reluctant to be among those that arrested him. And I was not.

I only met him afterward at Bonny Camp with Lawal Rafindadi. There is no way I could have maltreated him as being alleged in some quarters. I am glad most of the actors are still alive.”

Dasuki admitted that two young military officers traveled with him to Jos to brief Major General Buhari who was then the GOC of 3 Armored Division on the furtherance of the plan of the 1983 coup which made Buhari the major beneficiary of the ouster of the elected President Shehu Shagari. But when asked why he per took in the overthrow of Buhari 2 years after, Dasuki replied that Buhari ought to know whom to blame.

Dasuki went further to narrate how he supported the campaign aspiration of Muhammadu Buhari for Presidential elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011. He also narrated how he pleaded with Senator Ahmed Tinubu in the presence of Bisi Akande to accept Buhari as the joint Presidential candidate for ACN and CPC. Dasuki stated that he knelt down begging ‘Baba Bisi Akande’ who was then Chairman of ACN that ‘General Buhari is a man to be trusted.

Apart from serving as Managing Director of Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) after the return of democracy, he said, Dasuki had engaged in legitimate international businesses, mostly outside the country.

Sambo Dasuki was re-arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) few days after he was granted bail by the Federal High Court. The service had claimed at the time that the former NSA was under investigation for another offence. Now people are left wondering if there is more to his arrest.
