Building Bridges To China – 2016 Chinese Bridge Competition in Lagos

The Sino-Nigerian (relationship between China and Nigeria) relations grows ever deeper by the month as the governments of China and Nigeria continue to forge more and more relationships across social and economic lines.

One of the chief vehicles responsible for the growth and nurture of the Sino-Nigeria relationship, is the Confucius Institute (HANBAN) with its local office situated in the university of Lagos, and another in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The Confucius Institute, CI is charged with promoting China in its host country by enlightening people about Chinese customs and the Chinese language.

CI has been in Nigeria for several years and like other centres around the world, is helping to bridge the gap of knowledge and understanding between Nigeria and China. One of the ways by which CI accomplishes its task is by encouraging young people to understand the Chinese way of life, China itself, and of course the Chinese language. Its main vehicle for now is aptly called the Chinese Bridge Competition, which is now in its fifth edition.

This year’s edition is sponsored by Chinese ICT giants, Huawei Technologies.

 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition

The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition is a large-scale international competition organized and sponsored by Confucius Institute (Hanban), and is well-known in the cultural and educational exchanges worldwide. It consists of 3 events: “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign High School Students and “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students in China.

The competition is held yearly, with the aim of encouraging the learning and understanding of the Chinese language and culture by students from different countries in the world. It therefore looks to build a communication bridge between young people in Nigeria with young people in China.
