Policeman Sanctioned for Demanding N2,000 From Vendor

Lagos State Police Command has sanctioned the policeman, who allegedly demanded  N2,000 from a vendor, Ifeanyi Friday, who went to Kester divisional police headquarters to make a report last Tuesday of assault by Newspapers agents in Lagos.

The newspaper vendor had gone to make a report to the now sanctioned policeman against some newspaper agents who he believed maltreated him. Arriving at the station hoping to get the issue sorted, he was then asked to pay the sum of N2, 000 before any action could be carried out.

Nigerians cannot deny that this situation is a natural occurrence and a custom for most Policemen. They hardly render any service without some financial reward of some sort. Infact, they demand this compensation for doing nothing at all. Asking for payment for doing their jobs or in some cases, nothing at all is preposterous.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmus, disclosed that the policeman had been sanctioned, he also said that though  Kester Police Station was not under the jurisdiction of  Golden gate where the incident occurred, the complaint against the policeman’s action had been dealt with appropriately by the officer in-charge of sanctioning.

She did not, however, expantiate on  the nature of the sanction. It will be recalled that a 34-year-old vendor, Ifeanyi Friday, who was beaten up by six newspaper agents on Easter Monday, got the shocker of his life when he went to make entry at Kester Police Station, Lagos Island only for the officer on duty to demand N2,000 for case entry.
