Beaches In Lagos & Their Locations

Without beaches, who knows, Lagos would probably have been dry and solitary. This is because these beaches are part of the bubbly Lagos life that attracts visitors from all over the world.

In Lagos, there are private and public beaches where people from different parts of Lagos can go to enjoy the cool Atlantic breeze on hot humid days. If you don’t have a phobia for the ocean, here are some beaches in Lagos that are peachy.

Some Of The Beaches In Lagos And Their Locations

1. Bar Beach

Bar Beach is located along Victoria Island on Ahmadu Bello Way. It is a very popular beach in Lagos, known for its sand and bars. The beach extends from the west by the Institute of Oceanography all the way through Eko Hotel towards the east. Blocks of concrete act as artificial levees to keep back the Atlantic which often floods its banks. There are no coconut trees or plants around in Bar beach, but it’s not a bad spot for fruit lovers. There are also fun activities for sport enthusiasts such as beach soccer, volley ball, horseback riding along the shores, swimming among others.

2. Coconut Beach

Coconut Beach is a beautiful sandy beach which is surrounded by coconut plantations (as the name would suggest!). The beach is located in the town of Badagry which is approximately 70km to the west of Lagos and can be reached by car along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Badagry itself was once a key port in the slave trade with the Americas with most of the slaves eventually reaching Brazilian shores.

3. Tarkwa Bay

IMG_5575The Tarkwa Bay is on an island that’s a 20-minute boat cruise from the Lagos CMS dock. This beach can only be accessible by boat, as it is cut off from the main habitations of Lagos. This beach is sparsely populated most times, but there are friendly residents around – some of whom are fishermen.

The Tarkwa Bay’s serene environment is irresistible to those who love the beach. It affords easy access to the raging and fierce waves of the Atlantic as well as the less aggressive waters of the Lagos lagoon.

Tarkwa Bay also provides the safest swimming conditions for visitors. The water is calmer than the exposed Atlantic coastline elsewhere around Lagos. With a short speedboat trip journey from Lagos, you can amp up your Sundays.

4. Elegushi Beach

This hot, sandy, beautiful oasis located at Ikate Elegushi bus stop is a 2km drive from Lekki/Epe Expressway. Although this beach is not the cleanest in Lagos, it still  remains one of the most patronized beaches. Elegushi beach offers a mix of music, food, beautiful scenery of water. It is a must visit place for any tourist for its white sand beach ripping waves that lap the shoreline.

7. Eleko Beach

At Eleko Beach, you can rent a beach hut for the day and get someone to make some barbeque for you. Eleko Beach also hosts a small market that sells vibrant artwork. Most people find this beach a lot quieter than Elegushi, Alpha Beach, and the Bar Beach due to it being further along the expressway than all the other beaches. You will need to be careful though, as you might not find lifeguards on the beach.

8. Oniru Beach

Oniru Beach is the perfect destination for those looking for a peace and quiet and a break from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. The beach is located on Victoria Island and features a number of bars and beach huts following a recent estimated 15 million Naira investment by the beach’s owner, Sola Oniru. Note that this is a private beach and so payment is required for entrance.
